Electronic
Portfolios = Multimedia Development + Portfolio Development - a brand
new article under development for SITE 2000 and a chapter in Dr. Barrett's
book. Electronic portfolio development brings together two different processes:
multimedia development (assess/decide, design, develop, implement, evaluate)
and portfolio development (collection, selection, reflection, projection).
These two processes compliment each other and both are essential for effective
electronic portfolio development.

Create
Your Own Electronic Portfolio - an article under development for ISTE
and a chapter in Dr. Barrett's book. Describes seven different generic
software packages or strategies. In this article, I will discuss the structure
of each program, the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy, the
relative ease of learning the software, the level of technology required,
and other related issues.

Electronic
Teaching Portfolios - an article published by Dr. Barrett in the 1999
Proceedings of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education
(SITE). As we move to more standards-based teacher performance assessment,
we need new tools to record and organize evidence of successful teaching,
for both practicing professionals and student teachers. This paper will
provide an overview of different electronic portfolio development tools
and will introduce a strategy for using Portable Document Format (Adobe
Acrobat PDF) files to store and organize Electronic Teaching Portfolios.

Something to think about: What standards do you want your portfolios
to demonstrate?
The process I advocate involves organizing your electronic portfolios around
a specific set of standards or goals. In my university, we use our
Alaska
State Teaching Standards. Here is a sample in PDF (7 MB!) of
a
student portfolio from our MAT program that demonstrates those standards
(requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). For my undergraduate ed tech class
( ED
320 Self-Assessment ) I have my students assess their own competency
using the ISTE/NCATE foundation standards (link below). You can see
by the ED 320 link above, my students reflect on each performance indicator,
identify artifacts that demonstrate that they have met the standard, and
set goals for future learning. I will bring examples of how my students
can use a word processing, PowerPoint, HyperStudio, or a database program
to organize their portfolio reflections, artifacts, and projections.
Below are links to some national standards as well as the latest Illinois
Core Professional Teaching Standards. You also have program standards
that you want your students to demonstrate.
